DETERMINING THE BASIC DIMENSIONS OF PORTAINER® CRANES

The following sketch represents the calculation of the geometry of a Portainer crane based on the container ship specifications for which it will be used.

OUTREACH OF A PORTAINER® CRANE (R)

Use the following dimensions to calculate the required reach for a Portainer crane:

a: distance from sea side crane rail to edge of pier

b: container width

c: distance between edge of ship and containers

i: distance between pier and ship (fender clearance)

N: number of containers per beam

The above dimensions are used in the following formula to calculate required outreach:

R: a + i + c + (b*N) - .5b + 6

HEIGHT UNDER SPREADER (H)

Use the following dimensions to calculate the required height under the spreader for a Portainer crane:

T: height from the keel to the hatchway cover

z: maximum equinoxal high tide + 5

t: height of the container

K: number of containers on deck

P: safe distance to manipulate the container

The above dimensions are used in the following formula to calculate height under spreader:

H: T - min. draft - z + (t*K) + .1(K-1) + p
